Oops! Google's unannounced new Nest Cams spotted in Google Home app

PCWorld

The big smart home manufacturers have been leaking like sieves as of late, giving us juicy early previews of their super-secret upcoming releases. Philips Hue recently fell victim to its own leak that revealed its entire fall product lineup, and now Google appears to have unwittingly shared images of its new Nest cam hardware. First, a quick recap: Google had already teased--intentionally--a new Gemini smart speaker during its Pixel event a couple of weeks back, and just days ago it promised an upcoming Google Home update on October 1, complete with a partial image of what appears to be a new Nest camera. Instead, it seems Google may have inadvertently left images of its new Nest hardware in the Google Home app following a recent update. The images, which were spotted by Android Authority and appear to have been subsequently yanked from the app, don't reveal anything startlingly new about the new Nest cams, aside from the fact that they exist.

Google Gemini is coming for your private apps. Here's how to stop it

PCWorld

Google recently informed some users that Gemini AI will have access to numerous new apps starting July 7th, 2025. These include messaging apps and messengers such as WhatsApp, and it applies regardless of whether you actually use Gemini as an app assistant or not. In an email shared by Android Authority, Google states that they've "made it easier for Gemini to interact with your [Android] device" and that Gemini will "help you use" various apps "whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off." If you don't want this, you'll have to disable the feature in the Apps settings page, but Google hasn't yet provided an explanation of how this will work. Due to the vague wording in the email, the associated data privacy concerns, and the very sudden introduction of this change, many users are understandably concerned, especially since it doesn't seem to make any difference whether Gemini is activated or not.

Phew! Widespread Google Nest speaker issues appear to be fixed

PCWorld

Has your Google smart speaker been giving you the silent treatment lately? Over the past several days, owners of Google's Nest and Nest Hub devices have been reporting that Google Assistant has stopped responding to basic commands such as "What's the weather" and "What time is it?" Perplexed Nest users had been turning to Google's support team for possible solutions, but with little success. Luckily, Google just told Android Authority that it's deployed a fix and that "all users should be up and running now." The problems appear to have begun earlier this week, with Nest users on Reddit and other forums complaining that their smart speakers were going silent when asked the most basic commands.

Rabbit denies claims that its R1 virtual assistant is a glorified Android app

Engadget

The Rabbit R1, a pocket-sized AI virtual assistant device, runs Android under the hood and is powered by a single app, according to Android Authority. Apparently, the publication was able to install the R1 APK on a Pixel 6a and made it run as if it were the 199 gadget, bobbing bunny head on the screen and all. If you already have a phone and aren't quite intrigued by specialized devices or keen on being an early adopter, you probably didn't see merit in getting the R1 (or its competitor, the Humane AI Pin) in the first place. But this information could make you question the device's purpose even more. Rabbit CEO Jesse Lyu, however, denied that the company's product could've just been released an Android app.

What is Google LaMDA? Here's what you need to know - Android Authority

Knowledge and accuracy: LaMDA can access the internet for the latest information, while both GPT-3 and even GPT-4 have knowledge cut-off dates of September 2021. If asked about more up-to-date events, these models could generate fictional responses. Training data: LaMDA's training dataset comprised primarily of dialog, while GPT-3 used everything from Wikipedia entries to traditional books. That makes GPT-3 more general-purpose and adaptable for applications like ChatGPT. Human training: In the previous section, we talked about how Google hired human workers to fine-tune its model for safety and quality.

So which generative AI tool should you choose? There's no right or wrong answer here since each platform has its own pros and cons. On balance, we'd recommend Bing as it's the most feature-rich outside of image generation and coding suggestions. GitHub Copilot, meanwhile, is currently the best ChatGPT alternative for coding, but it's not free.

What's next for machine learning? - Android Authority

What is the single greatest adaptation of the human species? Our greatest trait is pattern recognition. In fact, it's so strong that we often read patterns where none exist. Historically, our ability to recognize patterns let us deduce when danger was near in time to take action. It also let us develop languages more complicated than a series of grunts and associations.

The rise of the machines is coming. By that, I don't mean that someone is about to break through a singularity and create a rapidly self-teaching AI that will enslave all of humanity. I mean, that's probably on the cards too, but it's not really what we're talking about today. We're talking about machine learning: Smart machines performing roles traditionally held by human beings. They're already used today in medicine, robotics, remote sensors, and even in ATMs.

Ever since films like The Terminator and The Matrix, AI and Machine Learning have been the coolest fields of technology. Well these principles are now a reality, and with The 2018 Machine Learning Bundle you could quickly master them. Bear in mind that as machines take more and more of the jobs out there, the market value of machine learning experts will rapidly increase. Who do think Skynet employed?
